On Saturday January 15th 2011, Kim Chang presented Chicken Feed Workshop at Kaiao Community Garden in Hilo. Kim has been feeding 42 egg laying hens for the past year incorporating the tactics of Master Cho’s Natural Farming learned from the master in Korea here in Hawai’i.

The basic feed recipe is

  • 30% fresh greens
  • 30% any fruits, sweet potato, left over food, imo4
  • 30% store feed
  • 10% fermented feces of the floor

Kim’s spending about $60 a month right now on the store feed. Perhaps it can be eliminated by replacing it with a local grown feedstock, like amaranth? Please experiment, Kim says. She feeds her chickens many weeds and hopes to gradually reduce the amount of imported feed while sustaining egg production of about 70%. See the video for the whole presentation.

Master Cho Certification Course

What a blast it was! Over 50 people attended Master Cho’s Cho Global Natural Farming Certification Course held July 12-16th in Makapala Kohala Hawai’i.

Master Cho’s revolutionary techniques are so effective that large chemical companies have threatened his life. Why? Because with Cho Global Natural Farming anybody can grow food without buying any fertilizers or pesticides.

Master Cho, founder of Korean Natural Farming and CGNF

Cho teaches farming in harmony with Nature. Start with a soil foundation made with micro organisms and other edible high quality ingredients that can be easily manufactured on the farm. Then as the plant grows, know what nutrients to give, again, all made right on the farm. Certain sprays are applied when the plant is fruiting and another when you want vigorous growth.

Fifty certified Cho Global Natural Farming are now able to verify precisely what Cho teaches to achieve amazing results. A group of teachers, researchers, farmers from all over the Island Chain as well as Los Angeles came together to participate in the first Natural Farming Certification in the Western Hemisphere. Natural Farming is the starting point of an anonymous revolution to transform the food supply back into the hands of the people.

Cho’s message is love. Love your plants, love your inputs, love your wife, and choose life. Nature will build one inch of living a soil every two hundred years if left to it’s own merit, and with Cho Global Natural Farming, a diligent human can complete the same process in six months. When cooperating with Nature, a farmer can build soil four hundred times faster leaving lasting fertility and resulting in abundant harvests at minimal costs and reduced labor. Natural Farming is the love Cho is talking about.

Black Soldier Flies Presentation by Robert Olivier

Robert Olivier, founder of CompostMania.com, gave two presentations at the Natural Farming Hawai’i Monthly Meeting for October. We video recorded both sessions so you can share this valuable information with friends and farmily. You can find out more about Robert on facebook.com/composting and twitter.com/composting

The basic idea is that Black Soldier Flies (BSF) can make up to 1/3 of an animals feed. This is huge in Hawai’i because we can grow the other 2/3 very easily with Natural Farming Methods. Also, we no longer have to bury food waste in the landfill with Robert’s BioPod Technology. Slaughterhouse waste and other agricultural waste streams can be turned directly into nutritious insect protein.

Robert eases the County problem of waste, turns trash into cash for commercial operations, and even has a home sized unit to feed a clutch of chickens in the backyard. Check out both videos and let the grubs go to work for you.

Egg Yolk Oil (Recipe)

Master Cho told a story of an old Japanese woman giving him this recipe for “All the terrible things the Japanese have done to the Korean people”, and perhaps it has enough mystical power to mend all that hardship. Make some and find out for your self.

Method

  • Cook a dozen egg yolk on medium heat.
  • When they are golden brown and “ready to eat”, turn up the heat to high.
  • Break egg into small particles.
  • Continue heating until oil releases, press oil from egg and remove from heat.
  • Store oil in a jar in the medicine cabinet.

Takes 20~30 minutes of high heat until oil releases. Make sure to have plenty of ventilation.

It’s been known to sprout cooked beans if used properly.

IMAG1722Your chickens on soldier flies. In just two weeks of feeding a diet supplemented by Black Soldier Flies, Robert Olivier of Compost Mania is able to increase the egg size by jaw dropping proportions. The egg on the far left is from the store, the egg in the middle was from before enriching the diet, and the egg on the right is now the common size from the flock.

Soldier flied may be the answer you are looking for in your poultry’s diet. Check out the full lecture by Professor Jeff Tomberlin of Texas A&M University given in Hilo Hawai’i on March 13th 2013.

No-smell, no clean pigs – May 2015

No smell, no flies, no cleaning, no problems pig pens, a.k.a. Inoculated Deep Litter Systems, were the topic of the May 2015 Natural Farming Hawai’i meeting and potluck. For over 5 years over a dozen operations have proven why this is the NRCS best practice for swine waste management plans, because there’s nothing to clean up! All the waste is digested right on the living floor reducing labor and eliminating the need for water.

Check out the slides from the presentation for your further review.

I was able to visit with Cho Young-San and Master Cho Han-Kyu in October 2016. We visited a lot of operational and test farms implementing different degrees of Korean Natural Farming.

I brought along my ipad and captured as much video of the operations as I could. Below is the playlist (meaning multiple videos) of them on youtube.

No smell pigs are hot topics right now. Imagine raising hogs with no cleaning, no smell, no flies, no vaccines and no antibiotics! I went to Korea in 2017 to attend KNF Advanced Swine Training for 5 days in Gokseong County to learn the secrets of this biological technology.

This course has a lot of classroom sessions to understand the Korean Natural Farming philosophy, principles and solutions for raising hogs. To spread this vital information to the world I videoed the entire trip and publishing it here to remain open source.

The last of the videos in this playlist contain the information about the pig nutritional cycle. Cho talks about how and when to feed sows to support them for optimal natural growth. If you want your sows to have many pigs and be able to provide nutritious milk, check these out for sure.

Beginners Guide to KNF

Wow. Where to begin learning KNF?

As a person fresh to KNF the language, foreign principles and the minutia of details may seem incredible when first starting. This guide will give you a cornerstone to begin your life changing journey into KNF.

The way chosen to present this Beginners Guide is to use words we are all familiar with. The names are chosen to describe Korean Natural Farming with concepts and language we are regionally familiar with in America. The goal is to make it easy to get started, apply the solutions, and grow nutrient dense produce with KNF now.

Korean Natural Farming

KNF stands for Korean Natural Farming. A farming method that deals primarily with Indigenous Micro Organisms, the living creatures in the soil that range in diversity and function. To maintain modern food productivity plants and soil life are periodically fed KNF Solutions made from plant, animal and mineral extracts diluted with water according to specific formulas to grow naturally nutrient dense produce. KNF is also famous for no-smell smell, no-cleaning pigs and chickens.

KNF Starts with Soil Life

We call the indigenous micro organisms: KNF Microbes and there are various recipes to collect them from the surrounding habitat. There is also a procedure for applying the KNF Microbes to the field.

A second type of microbe is used in KNF called KNF Police. This microbe keeps the whole galaxy in order and can rectify any chaos that arrises to a certain degree. Beware, applying inappropriate amounts of the KNF Police can be expensive.

Rich Soil is Well Fed Soil

The whole microbial economy is based on food. Want a rich productive soil? Ensure there is enough of the right kind of food at the right time and the microbes will repay you handsomely. They are working on your behalf!

The main food for the soil and plants is KNF Food made from plant material. The tips of plants make good growth hormone oriented food, flowers make good bloom phase food, and fruits make good fruiting phase food. KNF Food is preserved in sugar, another food, and soil microbes love it because it mimics natural plant exudates.

More than just food, the soil also need a host of other things to live. So KNF has more tools including KNF Medicine, KNF Cleanser, KNF Fuel, KNF Bloom, KNF Fruit and KNF Minerals. These including KNF Microbes, KNF Police and KNF Food make up the 9 core solutions of KNF.

There is much more detailed information on how to make all the KNF Solutions available, more than can fit in this beginners guide!

Reach Full Potential Using KNF

Applying the KNF Solutions is easy, and you don’t have to wait for everything to be on hand. Using even a partial formula will get you noticeable results. All formulas can be applied to the soil as a drench at 100 gal/acre or a light mist into foliage at 25 gal/acre.

The 6 KNF Formulas are Soil, Seed, Juvenile, Puberty, Maturing and Ripening, which all correspond to obvious growth stages in every plant or animals life. By applying the right formula at the right time you will help your plant reach full potential with the assistance of the microbes.

The KNF Solutions App for your mobile phone makes the calculations simple, easy, and accurate. It’s purchase directly supports this website.

Most crops will respond well to weekly applications of foliar sprays. KNF Formulas can be added to irrigation for daily application. Orchards and tree crops respond well to 2-4 treatments a year, especially right before flowering and after fruiting.

Growth in All Aspects of Life

At it’s heart KNF is based around a moral code and philosophy of love. The solutions are often made, formulated, and applied with great care. The belief is that if the soil is healthy, the plants are healthy, the animals are healthy, then we humans are healthy. There is a great reverence and understanding nature and the origins of life that has led to this system and it’s integrity is shared amongst all practitioners.
